“How long will this process take?” This is a frequent question I receive in regards to organization. The quick answer is simple, “It is up to you.” Truth be told, the more detailed answer is four-part:
#1 Size of project
Are we tackling a room, a collection/hobby, an entry-way, digital files, office, etc? Is the plan to work through multiple rooms? Understanding and knowing the scope of the project is essential.
#2 The client’s ability to make the decision, to “keep” or “go.”
You have to make the decision if you are ready to part with an item.
Remember, I am a Professional Organizer that desires to see clients unclutter, then organize. Keep in mind, organization is three-parts: objects, data and time.
Answering the question, “why?” is essential. To assist you in determining if the object, data, or time is valuable, I typically ask four questions. If the answer to any of the four questions is “no,” or “I don’t know,” it is time to reconsider its value and most likely, let it go.
- Does the object/data/time serve a purpose?
- Does the object/data/time bring you joy or have functionality to you or your home/home life?
- When was the object/data/time last used?
- Where will the object/data/time live?
#3 The client’s ability to accomplish “homework” between professional organization sessions.
If you only work on uncluttering, then organizing during the professional sessions, the process will take time, a lot of time. Change will be slow. Yet, keep in mind, it has taken years for you to accumulate the physical objects, piles of paper and time requirements. Letting go of these objects/data/time, will be a process, a lifestyle change.
Recently, I had a client state that they had no idea this process would take so long. This client was frustrated that change was not happening quickly. Realize, uncluttering, then organizing is a lifestyle change. One needs to create new processes, and habits to maintain and progress. You must be consistent and accountable. To simplify your home or office is no different than choosing to become physically healthy and strong.
Uncluttering, then organizing requires change, dedication, and motivation.
#4 The amount of time allotted to work each session
Albeit on your own, or with a Professional Organizer, the consistent time you allot will determine your forward progress. While you create your weekly data dump list in your 2 subject notebook, make time to unclutter, then organize. Is that 15 minutes a day, or 1 hour a week? Keep in mind, you should never work more than three hours. Be realistic. Do not bite off more than you can chew in the time you have allotted.
