“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be useful.” – William Morris

There are three parts to organization, which include: objects, data, and time.  Objects include anything three dimensional – clothing, books, toys, etc.  Data includes paper and photos.  Data, by far, is the most difficult and most time consuming to organize.  Time requires the ability to organize your physical time.  We all have the same 24 hours in a day; what and how you manage your time is the organization of time.  Albeit objects, data or time, each thing needs a home.

During each session I have with a client, I continually ask, “Where will this object, data, or time live?”  If you do not have a specific home for the object, data or time, you need to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Do I want to find a home for this object, data or time?
  2. Does this object, data or time bring joy or functionality to my life?
  3. If yes, where will the home be?

If any of your answers are no, then it is time to release the item either through donation or refuse.

“A place for everything, and everything in its place.” – Unknown

Once a home has been established for the item, BE INTENTIONAL!  Objects – return the item to its home after each use. Data – paper – ask yourself why keeping this paper is necessary; photos – establish a time frame to complete the project. Time – follow through on your commitment to yourself or others.

Where will your objects, data and time live? Where are their homes?
