Function versus perfection.  What is keeping you from beginning, or staying on the path leading to a simpler life?  In most cases, the answer has much to do with your own expectations.  As an example, think of what you want your bedroom to look like.  Your bedroom should be a place of tranquility, peace, and rest.  Your bedroom should be a place where you can go to reflect and feel grounded.  Now, consider your bedroom. (Insert, heavy deep sigh here.)  Many of you can envision the desired end-result, but have no idea how to get there.  It seems all too overwhelming, so you stop, never start, give up.

I do not want you to think of the end result.  I want you to step up and tackle the clutter.  How?  Start with a pile, a basket, a box of stuff.

Although extremely corny, I tell my clients, “A tisket, a tasket, just start with a basket.”

But more importantly, how do we stop the clutter continuing to pile elsewhere as we work in one area in your home.

Answer:  develop a 15 minute basket

What is a 15 minute basket you ask?  It is a basket that will live in your kitchen or living room that collects all the clutter that leaves its designated “home” throughout each day.  Examples may include, glasses, hair ties, make-up, kid toys, toothbrushes, sunglasses, scissors, dog leash etc.  Here’s the thing.  Do not waste time finding the “perfect” basket.  Consider baskets you may have in your home already, if you need to purchase a basket, do not make it a long, drawn-out process.  Purchase a basket.

Instead of making several trips throughout the day to place the above-mentioned items in their “home,” or allowing the clutter to build and take over your home, develop a basket to contain the day’s clutter.  The intent of the 15 minute basket is to collect, sort and return the items to their “home” at the end of each day.  Make this a family event.  Everyone should participate.  Completing this task prior to bed time routine is best.  You will be amazed by how much clutter you can diminish with just 15 minutes a day.  Think about it!  If every day, throughout the day, you collect the items that do not belong in the main living area, your clutter will substantially decrease before the week is out.

Not only are you eliminating the clutter that is already established.  You will curtail clutter from developing again.  Clutter affects you mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.  Be intentional.

  1. Find and begin using your 15 minute basket, now!
  2. With a realistic goal established, start with a pile, a basket, a box of stuff and begin to simplify you, and your bedroom.
